Every first Thursday of the month, Filter Magazine hosts SHIFT, an evening of solid grooves featuring resident conductors DJ Rhettmatic (World Famous Beat Junkies) and Plann.B (Soul Sessions) at The Crosby, the gem of Santa Ana’s Arts District and one of Orange County’s most intimate venues. Now in its third year, the monthly affair has played host to the likes of DJ Numark (Jurassic 5), J. Rocc (Stones Throw), Ta’Raach (Detroit), Sucio Smash (NYC), Eric Bobo (Cypress Hill), HouseShoes, Jedi (Digable Planets), Mr. Choc (Beat Junkies), C-Minus (Fantastik 4our) and a slew of other world-renowned selectors. For May’s Anniversary Edition, we’re ready to do it bigger than ever before, as we welcome two of my favorite producers in the game: FREE THE ROBOTS & DJ BABU. Make sure to check for his exclusive upcoming collaboration with the Mochilla camp, entitled Ambassador Bridge in 2011.ABOUT HOUSE SHOESDetroit’s Hip-Hop ambassador to the world, Michael “HouseShoes” Buchanan has been an integral part of the long burgeoning Motown resurgence. HouseShoes, a resident DJ at the hip-hop staple St. Andrews Hall from 1994-2004 has had personal influence over (at least) a full generation of well respected emcees, producers, and then-future DJs.As a DJ, ‘Shoes has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe with artists Guilty Simpson, Illa J, Exile, Aloe Blacc and Slum Village to name a few. Most recently, HouseShoes performed as tour DJ on Mayer Hawthorne & The County’s Spring 2010 16-city headlining tour. As a producer, he has worked with some of Detroit’s elite artists and musicians, including the late and revered J Dilla and Big Proof. His House Shoes Recordings has pressed the now-classic Jay Dee Unreleased EP (1996) amongst a slew of others. The King James Version Vol. 1 (2008), his tribute to the late James “Jay Dee” aka “J Dilla” Yancey was heralded by critics with rave reviews. Two self-produced 10” limited vinyl issues have also been released this year on Do-Over Records and All-City Records, respectively.
